Author’s Notes (May contains Spoilers)
This short did not come easily, I’d been experimenting with three other short stories that just didn’t go anywhere and I’ve been putting more time into my next novel.
I wanted to propose the thought of “what happens when we have an unfortunate interaction with the wrong person?”, when that person is having a bad day, and the conflict pushes them over the edge. I know this sounds eerily familiar to the movie ‘unhinged’, I never watched it but I know the premise, but this short is obviously quite different.
This is also the first short I’ve written where there’s nothing supernatural/cosmic, just people being people. I also took this story to learn more about different ways to deliver exposition while keeping the story tight, as well as experiment with having multiple POVs all written in present tense first person. On paper, the perspective should be jarring, and it does take away from the immersion, but I feel it elevates the story. I wrestled with a while on how to do this one, and tried to make it ‘scary’, but I think I’ve once again missed the mark shrug.
